Margaret C. (Peg) Kiene

August 11, 1925 - June 27, 2017

Margaret Christine (Bauer) Kiene Margaret C. Kiene (known to many as Oma) passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 27, 2017. She was born to Harry and Edith (Wolfe) Bauer on August 11, 1925. She lived her entire life in Valley City. Margaret (Peg) graduated from Liverpool High School in 1943, where she was a cheerleader. She went on to graduate cum laude from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She married her high school sweetheart Harold Kiene on June 19, 1948. Margaret began her music teaching career traveling to elementary schools throughout Medina County but the majority of her work was a Brunswick High School where she produced many musicals to include, among others, Oliver and West Side Story. She retired in 1980 and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. In the early 1970’s Harold and Margaret and a group of investors developed Weymouth Valley Country Club. It was a public course at that time, hosting the Lawson’s LPGA event in 1974 and 1975. Golf became one their favorite pastimes. She even had a hole-in-one on number 12! Margaret was an avid Ohio State football and Cleveland Indians fan. She was always nervous during those games-unless her team was comfortably in the lead. But her greatest joy was to watch her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren compete in numerous sports. A seasoned scorekeeper, she could always be counted on to know the stats. Bridge played a major role in Margaret’s life. She actually belonged to six Bridge clubs as recently as 2016. The friends she made playing Bridge were very important to her. More often than not she would come home and say, “I won 50 cents today!” She was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Valley City where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was a former member of the church council and an organist for a number of years. Mostly, Margaret cherished her family and loved to host family gatherings. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother James Bauer. Surviving are children Karen Maringer (Rick) and Alan Kiene (Joan); her grandchildren Michael Maringer (Katie), Kristin Seeley (Tim), Alex Kiene (Katie), Katherine Craig (Charlie); and her great grandchildren Noah, Zach, Kora, Graham, Levi, Samantha and Charlie. Visitation will be Friday, June 30, 2017 from 4-8 P.M. at Bauer Funeral Home 2089 Columbia Road Valley City. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 6656 Center Road Valley City. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to EUCC at the above address.
